What Is MCP? How Model Context Protocol Is
Transforming Salesforce and AI Agents.

A plain-English guide to the protocol connecting AI platforms like Claude and ChatGPT to Salesforce, and what it means for your CRM strategy.

Secure AI connections and data governance across business systems

Artificial intelligence has moved beyond answering simple questions. Today, AI can search your CRM, summarise customer histories, create records, trigger workflows, and coordinate across multiple business systems. The technology enabling much of this shift is Model Context Protocol, or MCP.

A Universal Connector for AI

Think of MCP as a universal connector for AI. Instead of building a custom integration for every model and every application, MCP provides a standard, much like USB-C for AI. It allows AI platforms, such as Claude and ChatGPT, to securely connect to Salesforce, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Jira, Slack, and more, using one consistent protocol.

What Changes for Salesforce Users

For Salesforce users, MCP changes the interface, not the system. Instead of clicking through multiple screens, a salesperson can ask, “Prepare everything for my ABC Manufacturing meeting.” AI gathers account details, open opportunities, recent cases, and emails, and returns a briefing in seconds. The CRM remains the source of truth. AI becomes the smart interface.

Where MCP Adds the Most Value

Common high-value use cases span the whole business, not just sales:

  • Sales assistants: preparing account and meeting briefings in seconds, not hours.
  • Customer service copilots: surfacing case history and suggested responses in context.
  • Executive reporting: pulling numbers together across systems on demand, instead of waiting on a monthly pack.
  • Meeting preparation: combining CRM, email and calendar context into one briefing.
  • Cross-system assistants: spanning Salesforce, Xero, Cin7, Outlook and SharePoint.

MCP Is Not a Replacement for Agentforce

One clarification is important: MCP is not a replacement for Salesforce Agentforce. Agentforce is Salesforce's native AI agent platform, built and governed inside Salesforce itself. MCP is a standard for connecting AI to external tools. In practice, many businesses will use both — Agentforce within Salesforce, and MCP to connect across platforms.

The Risks, and How to Manage Them

Risks do exist. Over-permissioning, sensitive data exposure, prompt injection, and poor data quality can all cause real problems if MCP is deployed carelessly. The mitigation is largely the same discipline good Salesforce governance already requires:

  • Least privilege access for every connected AI tool.
  • Dedicated integration users rather than shared logins.
  • Audit logs across every AI-initiated action.
  • Approval workflows for anything that writes or changes data.
  • Ongoing governance as new tools and models get connected.

Why This Makes Salesforce Partners More Valuable, Not Less

This is exactly why Salesforce partners may become more valuable, not less, as MCP adoption grows. The focus shifts from configuration to AI strategy, data architecture, secure integration design, and ongoing optimisation.

The Future of CRM Is Conversational

The future of CRM is conversational. Users will increasingly ask questions rather than run reports. Salesforce remains central, but AI becomes the interface. For forward-looking organisations, the opportunity is not just adopting AI, but adopting it securely and intentionally.
